DUCK & WAFFLE
We may be 15 days into the new year, but I would love to say Happy New Year to all my lovely readers, I do hope you had a great 2017 and are having a wonderful start to 2018! I have a few updates that will be happening to my blog... an expansion of some sort! GRE&D will be adding 'Sleeps' to the itinerary. This year I will be not only reviewing bars and restaurants but also hotels! So if you have any recommendations then please do leave them in the comment section.
To kick of 2018 I thought I would show you somewhere which is no secret to you all. Just before the new year, Andrea and I took a trip to Duck & Waffle for an extremely early breakfast! If you don't know much about the Duck & Waffle, head chef Dan Doherty set out to create London's first 24 hour restaurant, so whether you're hungry at 3am or you're coming in from a night out, there's a menu for every time of day.
Our slot was at 8:30 am, which doesn't seem early to some people, but on a weekend it was a little hard getting out of bed! The sun was rising, but slowly. We entered the glass Charlie and The Chocolate Factory-esque lifts and as we we're flying up to the 30-odd floor, we saw the sun slowly bathe the buildings in an orange glow.
Breakfast is one of my favourite meals of the day (when I have time to make it) and after looking at the breakfast menu, I knew it would be a hard choice. Our table was based in the middle of the restaurant which was nice because you still could see the surrounding skylines. I think if I had sat on the edge near the window I might have gotten a little height fright! First off - coffee. A thick, creamy latte which was exactly what I needed to start off the day.
For breakfast, I decided to choose the Duck Egg En Cocotte, with wild mushrooms, Gruyère, truffle and soldiers, Andrea chose the Colombian Eggs with tomato and spring onion, toast and avocado, with added chorizo. When mine arrived - I couldn't believe my eyes! It was like my ultimate comfort food. Cheesy, rich and full of earthy flavours burst with every bite. The soldiers were a great touch to the dish, adding a crunch to the dish, as well as a great tool to scrape around the edge of the dish! The duck egg was kind of hidden at the bottom of the pan, so you had to eat your way through the thick layer of cheese and mushrooms to get too it, but once you were there - it was like a golden liquid had oozed it's way out. Although I have egg and soldiers at home quite often, this was a more sophisticated, grown-up version. Andreas also looked so tasty - probably a lot healthier than mine! A simple classic with a twist. The eggs were cooked to perfection.
I wanted to try it all - especially the iconic Duck & Waffle breakfast, but maybe another time! What made this breakfast so special, was that the sun stayed low, it's rays hit different parts of the glass room which filled it with a warm light. It was magical and made the atmosphere extra special. Seeing London in all it's glory was defiantly worth waking up early for.
tip: book early in advance, it's full booked from 6am onwards!
